It was renamed after the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad arrived in October 1836, and by 1837 it was called Woodford's Lane, after William Woodford, a Revolutionary War general. Early in the 1900s it grew from about 30 residents to more than 100 by 1925, around a mill that made excelsior (wood wool) for packing.
